The University Grants Commission (UGC) is a statutory Organization of the Government of India for the coordination, regulation, funding and maintenance of standards of teaching, examination and research in university education. UGC grants recognition to university academic qualifications, gives accreditation to universities.

Medical Council of India (MCI) is a statutory body for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India. The Council grants recognition of medical qualifications, gives accreditation to medical schools, grants registration to medical practitioners, and monitors medical practice in India.

University Grants Commission (India) has approved a list of research journals. For knowing whether any particular journal is recognzed by UGC or not, please visit the URL link below. By entering the name of the journal, one can get information, wherther the journal is recognised by UGC or not.

Yes. Earlier, there was no rigorous check on the work of PhD scholars in India. Now, since PhD is a minimum requirement to go beyond a position in the Academia Positions in India, scholars were publishing in all sorts of sub standard journals, who publish anything for a fee. Therefore now UGC has prescribed journals in which papers published will be recognised for academic advancement.
