Banking system is a network of commercial, savings, and specialized banks that provide financial services. Banking sector refers to banks and other institutions which provide lending and investments.

Banking sector is made of all banking and financial institutions in a country, and as that it is subset of banking system, banking system is made of banking sector with rules, procedures and conditions in which it operates.

Banking sector is the collection of all bank and bank like companies , but the banking system is the governing roles pertaining to bank operations and interrelations between banks and the monetary system.

Bodi in his book investments wrote few pages about difference between conventional banks and shadow banks. There is many researches bold how Islamic banks have different system.

I wrote an article titled Foot Pass Through model, in my article I proved how all banks systems involved in 2008 meltdown, and I suggested a solution. this article accepted to be published in one of Cambridge journals, but still in publishing process, I can give you the link after publishing it.

however, matching between banks systems and core business for them will be good idea for researching. The available studies compared between them in general, and they affected by the crisis. but deep study in such title I didn't find.

In my opinion, banking sector is a generic term and is used to identify certain section that contributes to GDP of a country I agree with @Demetris Christopoulos.

Whereas, banking system aims at strategic and operational level details of a bank to function which may be different for different banks. For example; Islamic Banking System etc.
