In our work we make coating layer on the ammonium nitrate particles by using surfactants materials (acid, alcohol, amine and amide surfactant) for anti-hygroscopcity.
Surfactants have variou water solubility. The more water soluble is the surfactant the more hygroscopic it is likely to be. You could have surfactants that are more soluble in non polar organic solvents those are less likley to be hygroscopic. The molecular structure, critical packing parameters and HLB are all indicators on how hydrophilic (or lipophilic) is your surfactant. If you are buying a ready made surfactanat the manufacture should supplywith such technical information. I hope this helps.
