What the type of solvent (deionised , distilled water or….) used for measuring zeta potential of colloids? . I am getting zeta potential value of about -17 mV for distilled water. What is a minus sign? Where the ions came from?. Please give your valuable suggestions

The potential must not have a + or - sign. The potential is the work of charge transfer from the infinity to the plane of rupture of the diffuse layer. The zeta potential arises when the diffusion layer of the nanoparticles of a dispersed system breaks. This can occur as a result of Brownian motion (then about the magnitude of the zeta potential do not put a sign). When an external electric field (electrophoresis) is applied to such a system, it will be seen that the particles move to the positive electrode. Therefore, you have a zeta potential with a negative charge. For this reason, the zeta potential is often confused with the particle charge. The charge of particles arises from the difference in charge in the adsorption and diffuse layer after the discontinuity. The dispersion medium can be water, alcohol, etc.
Actually this is an interesting question. When you run pure de-ionized water, the instrument churns out a zeta potential value. Of course the number is meaningless, but what is the origin of these numbers? Is it contamination from particles in pure water?
