An offshore wind farm typically consists of 20-30 wind turbines. Data for the piled foundation design is collected by , say, nine boreholes. Due to variability of soil and the size of the farm, this may not be adequate and hence piles are designed assuming large safety margin, or even this design may be unsafe. Data needed to decide on the pile length and diameter. But data is not free.
The question is how to balance the cost of foundation and cost of information. Where do we stop and say we have enough data? Or, isn’t it better to spend the money which is needed to get more data, on the piles?
