What is the allowable stress for cast iron?
Codes for pressure vessels express their allowable stress as:
ASME Section VIII Division 2
S = smaller of: UTS / 3.5 or Yield / 1.5
Or according to the European code EN 13445
Sm = smaller of: UTS / 2.4 or Yield / 1.5
(The above expressions are much simplified here. What these code require is little bit involved).
The question is: if the same recommendation can be used for cast iron pipes?

Allowable stress=(yield stress/factor of safety)
But in case of brittle materials like cast iron
Allowable stress=(ultimate stress/factor of safety) because in brittle material ultimate stress is equal to yield stress.
Factor of safety for brittle material is 3–5
