To be objective and brief, let us refer to my personal experience
in the Q/A section of Researchgate:
On October 7, 2023, a response came from an unemployed immigrant in Porto as follows:
your answer reflects the fact that your understanding of physics needs to be adjusted. !?
3 weeks later, on October 29, the same hunter (I...M...), encouraged by the silence of the RG Q/A team, came back with a poor answer to my question:
, your question reflects your ignorance.!?
Do you have any suggestions?
I think, personally speaking, that rude comments are revealing about the lack of civility, and more importantly, lack of empathy of the commenter.
Why do people try to do science, a social activity, being rude to their fellows? It reveals how little said person understands about the scientific endeavor. My personal approach is leaving those comments to their own insignificance, thus, I ignore them because they are better answered by silence itself.
But there is a thing I am compelled to criticize about your question, why did you bring the immigration topic to the question? It says nothing about the commenter and it is offensive to other immigrants. I can remember at least a dozen nobel laureates who were immigrants at one point in their career. And I shall ask you what is demeaning about being an immigrant?
Consider a modest suggestion that Q&A sites should have a simple AI algorithm to review incoming answers and comments.
If these answers and comments focus on describing the question and its answer, you're fine.
But if they sneak into the description of the person offering the question/answer with harsh words like ignorance and lack of education. . etc., then these answers and comments should be deleted from the start.
