Children with GERD and cow’s milk allergy (CMA) are two common conditions that occur in infancy. This study was performed to investigate the frequency of CMA in a group of patients with GERD.
There are 2 groups each has one intervention
1- group 1 : ask the mothers to stop cows milk products during BF (breast feeding)
2- group 2 : give constant drug dose
study question is to check if there is an efficacy of the drug or the advice (health education) is better?
so what is the type of study design ?
RCT
Between-subjects (or between-groups) study design could be appropriate for such types of research. The parametric technique (called between-groups ANOVA) and its non-parametric alternative (the Kruskal-Wallis Test) can be used based on the assumptions about the population from which your sample will be drawn.
So the study design will be experimental study. RCT will be appropriate not quasi as I see 2 interventions ; verbal (advice in clinical office ) and the second intervention is drug dose..
From reading the abstract it sounds like the 2 groups were not randomised - all subjects received the drug initially, then only the ones who had not responded after 4 weeks were asked to eliminate cow's milk from the mother's diet....so the intervention was eliminating the cow's milk protein, with no real control group
Is there strong evidence to support the intervention of asking the mothers to stop cows milk products during BF? There are known harms to the mother (and indirectly to the infant if the restriction results in cessation of breastfeeding) from this which would need to be discussed in order to gain informed consent for participation.
