What is the simple statistical method to study monthly variation of rainfall data?

It depends on your objective. But standard deviation is a good measure of variability as it tells the variation of each data point from the mean. If the groups of sampled data from the same population are two, the Z-test and student t-test may help you depending upon the number of data. If the groups are more than two, you may need to go for ANOVA (analysis of variance) test.
