The gel electrophoresis staining market has witnessed a sharp shift from EtBr to other safer alternative products such as SYBR family of dyes, GelStar, GelRed, etc. But I think the EtBr is still the most widely used stain in electrophoresis followed by SYBR. I invite your thoughts regarding the comparison between market share of these stains
We use mostly EtBr since it is cheap and sensitive enough for routine applications. There are decades of experience and you can use highly diluted solutions. We use post-stain, re-use the staining solutions and keep the space where the gels are running free from EtBr. In case of the alternatives, you should wear gloves as well and be aware that these stains intercalate with DNA as well.
In each case you have to consider the local rules to deposit gels and solutions.
