A 12 floor building has been constracted. The administration is planning to build an animal house facility on the TOP of this high-rise building. What are the disadvantages/advantages?
Assessment of disadvantages/advantages highly depends on the types of animals to be kept there, as well as the function of the floors underneath.
If there are pretty large animals walking on the floors, or if the animals may produce loud sound, then it is necessary to apply acoustic strategies to control the sound.
The types of animals and the reason to have them there, also influences the circulation as well as the garbage management of the building. For instance in cases that the animals are kept for testing some viruses or other medical goals, then it would be necessary to provide separate garbage removal shafts and elevators independent from the rest of the building. This would help in reduction of health risks for the people in the other floors. It is also important to separate the ventilation air. Another aspect to consider might be to provide special comfort conditions based on the types of the animals, preferably using passive strategies in design.
A bunch of zoonoses transferred to humans from laboratory animals and vice versa, therefor to control of zoonosis outbreak and distribution of microbes it is better animal house to be considered in underground or first floors. Also transferring feed to upper floors and fecal pellets to first floor would be problematic.
Given that microorganisms spread from the top to bottom or vice versa is not much different, so it is better, ventilation and access to the twelfth floor is separated from the rest of the classes. If the facility allows, an elevator and escalator from the outside of the building dedicated to this class. As well as, because of daily washing in this field, the floor should be insulated against water and humidity.
The ornery smell of the animal Lab. that almost covers the building, is another problem. For this reason, a negative pressure of the Lab. will be helpful.
