I have a few questions about the control of clay soils in chalcopyrite flotation:
1-Is the effect of calcium ions on froth stability positive or negative?
2-What effect does increase lime have on clay control in chalcopyrite flotation? What is its mechanism?
3-Is the reason for the increased froth stability in the cleaner cells the presence of calcium ions or the low density of the pulp?
Calcium saturated clay soils would remain flocculated with almost no chances of dispersion.
As for the second question against answer of Dilip Kumar Pal , phyllosilicate clay minerals have negative surface charge, and relatively smaller cations with higher than unity valency would neutralize them easily, paving way for van-der-waals attraction between clas particles to dominate and form clumps. Mono-ionic cations do that to some less extant due to their lower charge density, ang hydrogen even less- first due to being solvated as hydronium ion rather than bare proton in solution. and water has only one-in-ten million hydrogen thus ionized at neutral pH. In fact, hardy-schulze law predict for cations, higher charge density means higher flocculation. All is said for soluble calcium ions in clay and especially applies for clay deflocculation for clay testing. I think the scenario would be more complex in case for mineral separation.
and for chalcopyrite froth flotation, you have to use high pH, right? Then higher fraction of sodium carbonate rather than higher fraction of lime I would encourage to prevent flocs of clay. Excess lime would react with acid or oil of frothers to make scum. No one likes floating scum for bathing. But for mineral separation by froth floatation, it can be sought or despised depending on circumstances.
