ZnO is photoanode material which can transport the electrons to conducting substrate by providing the surface chemisorbed excited dye to its conduction band.

If you want to improve efficiency of DSSC, It's time waste job to try with ZnO. The reason is that its stability issue. Which will degrade in acidic medium of dye and it can form complex with dye molecules.

It's better to go with TiO2 only and its different morphologies like tube, rods, fibers and etc.
