Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.So What is the role of Happiness for a healthy life?
Happy people have younger hearts, younger arteries, and a younger RealAge. Happy people recover more quickly from surgery, cope better with pain, have lower blood pressure, and have longer life expectancy than unhappy people.
Studies also suggest that happy people may have stronger immune systems -- they're less likely to get colds and flu viruses. And when they do, their symptoms tend to be mild.
Not surprisingly, happy people are better at looking after their health, too. When people's happiness levels improve, so do their health behaviors. They exercise more, wear sunscreen, and go for regular checkups.
Health and Happiness
Studies show that a person's health is one of the strongest predictors of happiness. But the link between health and happiness is complex. Research shows little correlation between a person's objective health -- as defined by medical assessment -- and happiness. It's our subjective health -- how we view our health -- that affects our well-being. So is happiness all in your head?
Not necessarily. For example, adverse changes in health do have a negative impact on happiness levels, at least temporarily. Poor health has the potential to significantly affect almost every aspect of your life: your independence, your self-image, your personal relationships, your ability to work and carry out basic daily activities. So it's no surprise that when your health takes a hit, your happiness does as well.
But people are resilient. We become accustomed to new life circumstances, good or bad. We adapt. Within a month or two of an adverse health event, most people have gravitated back toward the level of happiness they enjoyed before their health took a turn for the worse.
When the change in health status is severe, however -- for example, involving chronic pain or multiple disabilities -- the impact on happiness can be long lasting.
And both physical health and emotional health influence happiness. Mood disorders diminish quality of life even more than chronic physical ailments, such as arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes.

Happiness is definitely a key element to health. It is shown that only the fact smile increases the feeling of well-being and improves the physical and mental health of a person. Of course, the greater the happiness you feel a better person running your body and attitude to meet the challenges of everyday life. Happiness can come from the most diverse sources: professional success, the meeting or enjoyment of human or animal company, the success of those who feel close, improving conditions for consumption, physical and mental rest, and so on.
Happy Lives, Good Lives: A Philosophical Examination!
" We all want to be happy, but what does that mean? Happy Lives, Good Lives: A Philosophical Examination offers a thorough introduction to a variety of perspectives on happiness. Valuable insights are inferred from both philosophical and scientific research into the nature of happiness, and a range of examples of very different but potentially happy lives are considered. Among the questions at issue: Is happiness only a state of mind, or is it something more? Is it the same for everyone? Is it under our control, and if so, to what extent? Can we be mistaken about whether we are happy? What role, if any, does happiness play in living a good life? Is it sometimes morally wrong to pursue happiness? Should governments promote happiness through public policy? The asking and answering of these questions is valuable not only as an intellectual exercise, but also as a means of gaining practical insight into how best to pursue a happy life..."

A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world. ~ Paul Dudley White (1886 – 1973)
When we feel happy, we are more likely to be healthy and stay healthy. A review of more than 200 studies found that positive psychological well-being is linked with a lower risk of heart disease, as well as lower blood pressure, normal body weight, and healthier blood fat profiles.

Abstract
Human ability to experience negative and positive emotions has an evolutionary perspective and the presence of feelings designed to influence behavior should thus be reflected in physiological and immune interactions. The complex interactions between the immune system and the central nervous system have been studied extensively in schizophrenia and depression. On the other hand, effects of positive human emotions, especially happiness, on physiological parameters and immunity have received very little attention. Emotions are intimately involved in the initiation or progression of cancer, HIV, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders. The specific physiological responses induced by pleasant stimuli were recently investigated with the immune and endocrine systems being monitored when pleasant stimuli such as odors and emotional pictures were presented to subjects. The results revealed that an increase in secretory immunoglobulin A and a decrease in salivary cortisol were induced by pleasant emotions. The mechanisms by which positive as opposed to negative states are instantiated in the brain and interact with the immune system are not yet understood. The present review investigates relations among physiological measures of affective style, psychological well-being, and immune function. There is data to support the hypothesis that individuals characterized by a more negative affective style poorly recruit their immune response and may be at risk for illness more so than those with a positive affective style. Future research is needed to expand our knowledge of the physiological and immune interactions of positive emotional states and their beneficial effects on health.
Happiness is a decision making situation where a person have to decides either he/she remain happy or not in all types of situation. But Health of a persons depends on the many types of condition which may be either positive or negative. Happiness works as positive condition for good health.
Happiness is a state of mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Think pleasantly, engaged sport and read daily to enhance your well-being. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
It is easier to think that's the correlation but it is not always there. If you refer to health as a holistic state incl. spiritual health, happiness certainly promotes health but we can be physically healthy and yet unhappy and vice versa - happy but unhealthy.
"Health, happiness and success depend upon the fighting spirit of each person. The big thing is not what happens to us in life, but what we do about what happens to us."
I might recomend the book, The Happiness Trap, by Russ Harris, to counterbalance the positive psychology pablum that circulates on this topic. John Stuart Mill's "hedonic paradox" might also be worth bearing in mind. Perhaps the pursuit of happiness is a fool's errand -- and one that leads us to miss out on other, often richer dimensions of the human experience. Love matters so much more than any particular mood state and, as we all know (when we're willing to contact the experience), love offers no guarantee of happiness.
Iranian philosopher and theologian Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ghazālī recommends people to love themselves, their families and children, to love what they do, and love their future. This is what constitutes the genuine life for humans.
yes, i think individual decides to be happy or unhappy. For example , if two person meet with each other then either cases may be happen for both person ( 1st person happy, 2nd person happy), (happy, unhappy) , (unhappy, happy ) , (unhappy ,unhappy ) . So when two person meet they depends on the behaviour of each other. But when
person decides to remain happy in all situation he will remain independent of the situation/condition.
I think that happiness is a possible consequence of healthy life. But there are happy persons without healthy life. Happiness has to see more with wisdom and coherence, and the care of the person in its totality: spiritual and material.
a life with out any sens of happiness could bring dammage to health. So, we have to make our selves happy even if there is nothing calls to, it just to make my self healthy as long as possible.
Hapiness? Depending which is it source. For some people love is the highest form of happiness, for other enough food for the family just for a single day and sometimes the simple fact that we wake up alive next day is the supreme happiness! I’m not very convinced that happiness is a real state of fact, but I'm very sure that when I’m imagining my self happy everything is on the highest possible level! And it is available for my health too!
Happiness Is A Substance Of A Long, Healthy, And Stress-Free Life!
"I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition." Martha Washington
"... Spent some quality time with yourself everyday and clear out the “clutter” that may build up in your mind and refocus those thoughts on positive things. When you do, you’ll be surprised how much you’re able to concentrate on what’s really important to you. After all, it’s YOUR life to live and no one else. If no one likes what you stand for, then maybe it’s time to find other like-minded people that respects your way of living a purposeful and stress-free life!"
Happiness is really very important for a healthy life. It results into a free mind which again results into a free of stress and finally a sound health.
Well for every minute you frown, you lose sixty seconds of happiness. Happiness and a healthy life are directly proportional and dependent on each other. Without happiness, life will be full of stress which leads to a deterioration of health. Research has shown that stress can kill! Yes! So the main role of happiness is to prevent or release stress.
It isn't what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it. ~ Dale Carnegie
TO ME; HAPPINESS IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS OF STRESS-RELIEF TO COMBAT POTENTIAL DISEASES THAT LIVING ORGANISMS ALL WOULD SUFFER FROM SOMEHOW AND IN SOME WAY. ALSO, IT IS THE ULTIMATE AIM (OR "NIRVANA") OF THE LIFE JOURNEY WE, AS LIVING ORGANISMS, ALL GO THROUGH.
"If you have health, you probably will be happy, and if you have health and happiness, you have all the wealth you need, even if it is not all you want."
Actually, happiness and health are two mutual properties: That is to say, happiness brings you health and, on the other hand, your health brings you happiness.
It is rightly said that happiness is related to mental well being of human beings. Similarily, Health is related to the physical well being of humans. They are closely correlated and if, experimented through statistical means, probably, the relation shall be strongly positive. To my understanding, there are two important parameters, which can be analysed.
One is may be with physical verification,as i read it, that frowning needs more muscles as compared to smile. And on the other hand, a person close to the Almighty Creator, shall always be content and hence happy, thus leading to healthy life.
So, in short, these may b related both ways, in worldly manner and eternal manner.
" We need to -Stay close to the Creator, to be happy, leading to good health".
If scientists proved unequivocally that positive moods improve health, would policymakers act? Some observe that, in the U.S., we define “happiness” in economic terms—the pursuit of material goods. They contend that even an avalanche of research showing that emotional well-being protected health would have no traction in the policy world. Many Americans believe, after all, that people are responsible for their own lives...
Mapping happiness!
Drawing on recently compiled data from a nationally representative study of older adults, Kubzansky is beginning to map what she calls “the social distribution of well-being.” She is working with information collected on participants’ sense of meaning and purpose, life satisfaction, and positive mood. By tracking how these measures and health fall out across traditional demographic categories such as race and ethnicity, education, income, gender, and other categories, she hopes to understand in a fine-grained way what it is about certain social environments that confers better frame of mind and better physical health.
Happiness is important for healthy life if we feel tensed then we might not be happy and get some emotions that may cause some illness. But if we feel good and try to be happy by taking good in everything and not thinking too much about a specific thing until or unless it is very serious and then also in that we should try to sort out the things in a positive manner and then in that also we should feel good and be happy so that we get to lead a good life and by doing this our heart will stay younger and we can live to many years as well.
Real happiness is not dependent on external things. The pond is fed from within. The kind of happiness that stays with you is the happiness that springs from inward thoughts and emotions. You must cultivate your mind if you wish to achieve enduring happiness.
The art of living does not consist in preserving and clinging to a particular mode of happiness, but in allowing happiness to change its form without being disappointed by the change; happiness, like a child, must be allowed to grow up.
