During the ‘Brexit’ campaign the British politician Michael Gove famously said that the “people in this country have had enough of experts”. Similar concerns have been voiced regarding the IPCC regarding climate change. On the other hand, it is clear that experts such as academics can have an important role in the public debate.

So this got me wondering:

(1) What different roles can an academic take in the public debate? What roles take academics in your country/field?

And related:

(2) What role should we take (are there any roles we should avoid/take more often)?

Thanks in advance for your answers!
