My question is a rather simple one; I was just wondering how would you pronounce Arion "fasciatus". I pronounce the 'sc' like in "fascism", while some pronounce it like in "fascination". I'm a masters degree student working on a thesis on parasites in terrestrial gastropods, and it would be nice to be sure of this pronunciation for my future presentations on the topic. I would appreciate to hear your opinion on the matter.
I'd say that both are possible and acceptable. The pronunciation as in "fascism" will be chosen by persons who prefer to use a classical Latin pronunciation, while the alternative (pronunciation as in "fascination") is more in line with modern speech. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the second is even in line with medieval Latin pronunciation.

Actually the word Arion could itself be pronounced in different ways, with emphasis or not on the "a" or on the "i", and there would be also a few ways to pronounce the "r". Latin language was spoken for centuries over a wide geographical area, and undoubtedly the accents greatly varied with periods and regions, similarly to English today. I would suggest that you adopt a prononciation that will be the easiest for your colleagues to understand when you will use this name in discussions with them.

I would suggest to pronounce fasciatius with hard "k" like sound as in skating.
I suspect that the species name is derived from the band of orange color. in that case the species names etymology would be derived from the latin term fascis (see https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fascis#Latin). But even knowing that you would have to decide which latin pronouciation you want to use ...
The sound "SCI " in Latin is pronounced exactly as the English "she", derives from fascia, which means a band, bandage, swathe. But I agree with Oliver Pauwels: I have heard the Latin names (I work on copepods) spelled in English with the English pronunciation, and nobody would understand my Latin (I am Italian) spelling.... so I would stick to the most common pronunciation in your language, or to the English one (which would be with the sound sci pronounced as s-k)
Thanks for the great answers! It seems the best thing for me to do is to change to pronounce it like in fascination, rather than the way I did (fascism), and thus use the same as most people I have talked to at my institute. Thanks again!
