What is the result of the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm if it is not possible to determine the shortest LFSR from a given sequence?

I applied to the algorithm input a sequence of 255 characters (0 and 1) generated by LFSR-8. The result of the algorithm is 8, this is correct. But when I input a random sequence of 1000 characters (0 and 1), the result is 500. What does this mean? I.e. can this sequence be reproduced by the LFSR with the number of registers 500?
