I know of some excellent journals in Plant Taxonomy which do not have impact factor.
There are many online journals which show pseudo-IF.
Papers published in good journal with real high impact factors would definitely be good but in my opinion IF should not be sole criterion for future advancements.
In my opinion, it is becoming a pure business. Some very respectful journals with rigorous and serious review procedure actually have lower IF than other easily available, 3 week-review-period kind of journals. Yet as academics we need to cope with such a "market" and strive to increase our academic metrics, such as h-index.
The big picture is that first world that have applied science driven economy is the most beneficiary. In Africa or third world which are raw material driven countries , do not think science drives economy. Poor fund research will not be published in HIGH Rated IF journals.
Usama A Ebead , I agree. Sometimes it is not fair, I published in ACI and have another publication in PCI which will be available soon. Those two journals are very tough to publish in and have a very low acceptance rate (relatively), yet, they have a low RG score (1.03 and 0.23, respectively). Meanwhile, some open source journals with much lower reputation have higher scores.
I think it depends on the institution and their view on impact factor, their interpretation and biases. Some think it's good to publish in high impact journals to gain acceptance in ones area of research, some believe they have better content in terms of validity and repeatability. Some believe even more but at the end, they can't have access for reasons related to where the work was carried out. So it's not an easy divide
In low IF journal some good research works are published, it doesn't mean that those journals are inferior. If your research work novel and contains large data set, definitely it will get accept in good rated journals too
Ayodele, many institutions are realising that the publish or perish syndrome has contributed to the current deplorable state of academic excellence, with time actual excellence will be at the front burner. A change in the right direction is coming and very shortly too. Some of my thoughts!

Scientific research is one of the main pillars in the work of the universities to achieve its objectives. It is based on the educational process in the fields of teaching and creative thinking and scientific communication between researchers. It is also one of the basic indicators of the progress and development of universities when competing among them by the faculty members and research centers. Scientific output. For this reason, universities adopted various strategies in encouraging faculty members to write and publish scientific in all its forms and in its various disciplines.
"Many international classifications of universities have to take into consideration their criteria for evaluating universities and their international ranking depending on the size of the global intellectual production of these universities. For example, the Shanghai Classification of the Jiao Jong University (ARWU) since 2003 is based on four criteria, the quality of research performance of universities, which accounted for (40%) of the relative weights of standards,
Since 2004, the Times University of the World's Rankings has allocated 30% of its assessment of universities to the deployment rate for each faculty member.
The QS classification established a criterion for citations, with a relative weight of 20%
The Ranking Web World Universities has also established a standard of excellence, which includes the number of scientific papers published in international high-impact journals, and is allocated a relative weight of 15% for this criterion. Therefore, the various universities have sought to provide the necessary requirements for compatibility With the criteria of these classifications. "
Increased your H index means your scientific importance is increasing That would be reflected on the important of your Cv but actually didnt affect your academic promotion
