What is the relative role of mitochondrial CREB disruption on brain neurodegeneration, assuming that nuclear and mitochondrial proteins are identical?

If CREB is knocked out in mice it leads to neurodegeneration. Mitochondrial CREB phosphorylation is affected with toxicants. Would this lead to neurodegeneration in affected populations?
