Both parameters express different characteristics while COD refers to the amount of oxygen needed to oxidize organic matter (dead or alive) or particulate dissolved in water, the BOD refers to the oxygen consumption by aerobic organisms in an volume of water, in a given time.
While coefficients are used to relate the two variables, this is a gross error. It's like comparing the size of the feet of a person with ... the skin color.
It's just a point of view ...
In some cases, can be used for water quality indices that summarize in a single number the values of several variables: dissolved oxygen, BOD, COD, coliforms, salinity .... others. These indices have been criticized, but can be useful when they are developed for a particular watercourse. Used to compare the variation of water quality along the time.
