I am having a mixture of solid materials which is to be heated up and pored to make a layer of 5 inches broad and 5 mm thick. The material is allowed to cool at room temperature.
My confusion is, if I somehow change the softening point of the material, what will be the effect on the drying time? Lets say I am managed to increase the softening point from 100 to 110 deg C, will the drying time for the material will be more of less? Will it solidify fast or slow?.
Could you refine: if you work with a mixture if two SOLID materials - why you are asking about the DRYING time. Where is the component to dry ? Do you have a 3rd component which is liquid//solvent ??
It depends on the material you add to increase or decrease the softening point and that will determine the time taken to dry. It also depends on how much of the material (3rd) you add in terms of the overall composition.
Do you mean drying time as in solidification time ... ? drying may be effected even by the 5inch by 5mm mold that you use. Please define drying.
I am asking related to the 2-3 solid material mixture when heated and applied in a layer of 2.5 mm.
The time taken to again solidify is referred as drying time.
My best hypothesis based on the limit information is below:
Most likely, the higher softening point will lead to faster "drying" time.
The solid (sounds like they are polymeric if they soften at 100-110 degC? Doesn't sound like most metals, although there are some exceptions) can be either a glass or crystal (can be a mixture of both too....)
If it's a glass - the softening point correlates to your glass transition temperature (Tg). So when you're cooling the solid, the solidification (what you refer to as drying) will start to happen as you approach and go below the Tg. So the higher your softening point (and thus the higher your Tg), the earlier in the cooling process that your drying starts.
If your material is a crystal, then the softening point is correlated to your melting point. There is no general rule for all materials that tells you at what temperature your polymeric crystal (or even organic small molecule crystal) start to crystallize quickly (for metals, usually the crystallization temperature is very close to the melting point, as long as you are not quenching at extraordinary speed). But, assuming you're making minor tweaks to essentially the same material, then most likely the higher your softening point (i.e. higher your melting point), the higher your crystallization temperature, and so the earlier in the cooling process you would see "drying."
So if the few assumptions made are true, then both glasses and crystals would be expected to "dry" faster when your softening point is higher.
