Various shapes other than spherical (nanorods, nanocages, nanoshells, etc.) can be used to achieve a wide tunability of the plasmon resonance. This is much desired for biomedical applications when the resonance is tuned to the so-called biological transparency window in NIR. Depending on a particular shape parameters like the aspect ratio (length/diameter), wall thickness or thickness of the shell can be varied for shifting the resonance either way.
