The global warming phenomenon, degradation of surface soil organic matter is increasing yielding lower molecular weight and water soluble metabolites. The increasing rate of release (temperature being the driving element of microbial activities- degradation, which promote the leaching of the organics to deeper layers where it accumulates due to the restrictive effect of the ground water table. The release of fertilizers such as nitrate and phosphate into water bodies can also impact of organics transformation and their ultimate behaviour (chemical and or physical) characteristics in the soil profile.
