I have downloaded some Landsat 8 data, however, I found that the pixel values are quite large and as I understand the range should be between 0-255 while in the data that I downloaded I found unrealistic numbers. Could you please give any comments or advice about that?

No - LC8 is 16-bit data. I don't know how or where you got your dataset, but I scale mine by 10,000, multiply by the cosine of the zenith angle, to get useful Top of Atmosphere values.

Landsat 8 sensor provide improved signal-to-noise (SNR) radiometric performance quantized over a 12-bit dynamic range. (This translates into 4096 potential grey levels in an image compared with only 256 grey levels). The products are delivered in 16-bit unsigned integer format and can be rescaled to the Top Of Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and/or radiance using radiometric rescaling coefficients provided in the product metadata file (MTL file), as briefly described below.
Landsat 5/7 are 8-bit data (0-255 range), while Landsat 8 is 16-bit data. You can either use the DN values or convert to TOA using the "REFLECTANCE_ADD_BAND_X" and " REFLECTANCE_MULT_BAND_X" correction factors in the metadata (MTL.txt file). Conversion to TOA Radiance is also possible.
Radiometric resolution of Landsat 8 data is 16 bit. So the range of DN value of the pixels is 0 to 65536.
