Sealed 99% trimethylamine Standard bought from Sigma-Aldrich.
We believe there must be proper procedures to prepare calibration samples for its calibration on GC-MS or other systems as it is very specific. It has very low boiling point: 3-7oC.
Sharing your experience here is very much appreciated.
For GC and LC/MS we used the salt, trimethylamine hydrochloride, as a standard which can easily be weighed, not the neat liquid. You would need to accurately weigh the liquid into an acid solution to prepare an accurate standard. We also used the D10 chloride salt as its internal standard. On the GC/MS you can inject aqueous solutions in the split mode or use splitless mode with chloroform, methanol, or ethanol solutions. If you have to work with the neat liquid be sure to open the vial and work with it in a fume hood; wear gloves and eye protection since trimethylamine liquid tends to superheat and then boil (bump) vigorously. Everything that the liquid touches has to be cold or it will boil off, I used a pipet cooled in ice with about 20% v/v methanol to measure it out, but I also got its final weight after dispensing it into a sealed thick walled pressure vessel. It is very difficult to keep the neat liquid dry when you work with it.

Thanks for recommend a reference. Actually we want to use it in gas phase as we use sorbent tubes to collect samples. After reading, we may see if the method is suitable for us to use.
