You may choose Wistar albino rats for the ultraviolet ray B-induced photodermatitis. Symptoms of psoriasis induced by ultraviolet ray B mimics the human Psoriasis Vulgaris. For psoriasis induction, shave 10% dorsum area (1.5 × 2.5 cm2) of rat skin using depilatory cream/ hair clipper. Irradiate the shaved portion of skin for 15 min (1.5 J/cm2) at a vertical distance of 20 cm with UV-B lamp.
There are several literatures available describing the UV-B range of 280-320 nm with the exposure time in the range of 15-30 min for the induction of psoriasis. You may observe variability in the UV-B range and exposure time for the induction of psoriasis. We have found psoriasis-like symptoms at a range of 385 nm (see the attached article) for 30-45 min. After irradiation for 30 min, we observed the redness on rat’s skin followed by the gradually increasing erythema after 6-8 h. After 48 h there was the presence of silvery red scale scales on exposed rat’s skin.
