The expected reaction between asphalt cement and nano-silica is of physical type only, the high surface area of nano-silica can change the overall properties of asphalt cement such as viscosity, rheological properties. As far as chemical reaction is concerned, asphalt is an inert material (balance of electric charges) and it will react with materials of hydrocarbons origin only such as rubber, oil ...etc.

Even for the references supplied by Meshram, you can come to the same conclusion of no chemical action.

Mostly, SiO2 act as filler material for asphalt and nano silica can play with surface forces between asphalt and aggregate. I think that adding silicon coupling agent is best way to occur chemical reaction into asphalt mixture.
