Green buildings refers to the structure, the use of a process that is environmentally responsible and efficient in the use of resources throughout the building life cycle: from positioning to design, construction, operation, maintenance, restoration, demolition. This requires the close collaboration of design team, architects, engineers, and client at all stages of the project and the practice of green buildings expands and completes the interests of classic building design in economy, services, endurance and comfort. Although new technologies are constantly evolving to complement current practices in creating greener structures, the common goal is to design green buildings to reduce the overall impacts of an environment built on human health and the natural environment.
There is no consolidated law for green buildings in India.
Energy Conservation Building Code ECBC is made applicable to buildings with a load of 500 KW or more.
The National Action Plan on Climate Change and National Mission on sustainable Habitat address energy efficiency in buildings.
Similarly policy for water efficiency like water harvesting, on site wastewater treatment plants etc have been made mandatory in few states and cities.
Green Building rating systems exist and operative.
But regulatory measures need to be taken. Building codes,Energy efficiency obligations (i.e. compulsory saving of energy targets), Mandatory audit and energy management programs, procurement regulations for energy, water and material efficiency are few important areas need to be focused.
