Can anyone tell me the reason why electrical conductivity of groundwater (handpump) is coming higher when come in contact with copper? electrical conductivity is showing 4120microsiemens/cm.
I store the handpump water in copper jug and after 2hrs electrical conductivity increases to 3350 from 1480. what is the reason behind this?
To your first question, I must say that the most desirable threshold of electrical conductivity varies with the type of use intended with the extracted water mass like drinking, bathing, agricultural use, and so forth. However, to the best of my knowledge as per WHO (2004) the EC of drinking water should be below 1500 micro S/cm.
To your second question, I must add that such an increase in Cu concentration is quite unlikely. However, you might check the pH of the water too. The best possible explanation is the dissolution of copper from the Cu jug.

The water which I am testing is used for drinking purpose. most of the people used for their household activities. I dont know the reason immediately after putting in copper the conductivity increases.

The reason I asked to check the pH is that at higher pH (>9.0) Cu dissolution takes place very quickly.
There is no limit for drinking water in Norway. In N groundwater the EC is on average 100 mikroS/cm in soil and 300 in wells in rock. Anything above 500 to 1000 is suspicious.
