You have to be empathetic and enthusiastic, which means you need to have the teaching gene. If you don't like teaching, if you don't want to accompany your students, then the coaching will be disastrous. Not being afraid to take time and being able to explain mistakes without judgement are much appreciated. Repeating the most important information while first allowing the student to explain his or her reasoning is another aspect of the job.

Just showing respect may enhance student's skills.

What's more, this can lead to a virtuous circle where the student does the same thing with subsequent students.

I believe the most effective approach today is a "coaching" approach -- it involves affirming what is done well; exploring/making recommendations for improving areas that need further development; and, encouraging and answering questions the person may have re: effective teaching, meeting students' needs, managing workload, etc.
