In South Africa, there are no laid-down requirements for prior publications for a PhD. The examiner is asked inter alia if the material is worthy of publication, thereby avoiding the hiatus introduced by waiting for referees and editors. However, it is very difficult to fail a PhD candidate who already has 5 journal papers and 2 conference papers, as long as they are related to a thesis-theme.

Thank you for your question. I will answer based on my experiences at a South African University and the practice in Zimbabwe Universities. At a South African University I studied, they required PhD students to submit one peer reviewed and indexed Journal Publication with an International and reputable Journal before submitting the Thesis. In Zimbabwe some Universities require two Peer Reviewed Published Articles. There is no standard and norm to the number of articles. Each University has its own prescriiptions so it appears.  Best regards

Regulations for Award of Ph.D. Degree in Indian universities are framed in superession of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Awards of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulation 2009 notified in The Gazette of India [No.28, Part III-Section 4] for the week July 11-July 17, 2009. Ph.D. research scholars shall publish at least ONE research paper in peer-reviewed refereed journal, duly approved by the UGC/University, and make two paper presentations in conferences/seminars, recognized by the Department Council concerned, before the submission of the thesis for adjudication and produce evidence for the same in the form of presentation certificates and reprints.

As per Fiji Higher Education Commission (FHEC), there is no clear cut guideline for publication during PhD. Individual universities may impose other rules, but it is certainly possible to get a PhD with no publication. As a part of thesis, you may not be asked to publish anything. Particularly in the traditional form of thesis.

In fact I have seen the cases, where nothing was published during the thesis journey, and still the degree is granted, but the things are changing now.

As I wrote in my answer to your previous question, the legislation in Bulgaria did not fix the number and quality of publications for the defense of PhD thesis.

This is regulated by every university.

As attachment you can see the minimum scientometric criteria in my university.

Although, it's in Bulgarian, I think you will understand the numbers :)

I would say there are no general regulations for univeresities in the Czech Republic, it is usually established by single faculty and specific subject. For neuroscience at Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk university, we have ti handle 2 original journal articles which at least 1 of them must be your first author, plus at least one another original publication where you are a co-author. All of these papers must have impact factor above 1 but generally our lab counts IF over 3. No regulation is conceerning indexing but honestly these journals with such IF are at least in Scopus or Web of Science. 

For Faculty of Informatic, there is not a number of publications indexed in Scopus or WoS but we have to have at least 2 A ranking conference publications (presentation and full paper postconference proceedings) and 1 B ranking conference. However, each PhD thesis and its thematic focus is evaluated individually. Faculty of Informatics much more prefers conferences rather than journals. If you choose journals, it must be indexed in Google Scholar, Scopus or WoS.

In Iran, it differs from a university to other universities; but, generally they require students to publish at least two journal articles. One of them should be indexed in JCR, but the other can be published in Persian journals. This is a formal case for Islamic Azad University.

@Maryna -- 1. On a first reading of your question, I assumed that these papers were self-authored papers in the field. Is this what you meant?

2. Your phrase "conference thesis" makes no sense, as research conferences do not accept theses. So what did you mean?

Hello- my experience from both UK and US universities is that there is no rule of thumb. Different universities mandate different things. However, I would always advise my Doc students to have published an article in a highly ranked journal before they are ready for their viva. The scholarly reviews and feedback are a tremendous help toward fine tuning the thesis prior to it being submitted. In addition, the fact that no first tier journal would toy with its credibility due to publishing a work that its not up to par with its contents, makes for solid argument in support of one's thesis especially if there is a doctoral committee involved with many, and not necessarily smoothly collaborating academics.
