Should we focus on describing a single point and giving our own conclusion or opinion on that using different literatures or identify a gap and explain that?
In the applied research, I think it is always advisable to do a thorough critical review and list down major critical issues and gaps to contribute to the literature.
In addition to what Hardeep Chahal said, the review should have a methodology section indicating the parameters of your review and the data included in the review. I think you can search articles on how to write a review or systematic review paper for detailed guidance.
I also believe you should know from the onset which review you plan to undertake. Is it systematic, state of the art, expert review, etc.? This is crucial.
Now many researchers are adopting meta-analysis based on systematic literature review methodology to identify, filter and shortlist the significant papers in the domain. This technique is especially useful if the literature is very vast with more then 300 papers. You may even use some GUI based text analytics tool like Bib Excel for extracting and analyzing textual details and software called Pajek or Gephi for visualization.
Adopting the above methodology will provide a birds eye view and interesting inferences and hypothesis regarding the developments in the field which can be further validated through a descriptive review later in the course of research.
Kindly note the following points
1. The review should have a well stated inclusion and exclusion criteria for the selection of papers
2. If possible utilize either Web of Science, Scopus databases or both instead of Google Scholar for literature search. There are many advantages
3. Definitely try to identify solid research gaps in the field and propose future research possibilities
4. Do focus/state a specific problem or objective for review
Please read it and share it with everyone. It is talking about prosumer also for the first time in this book we talk about magic and its power in product design. It is talking also about future of consumers .I request you put the link of book on your page and your school website for your students.
The research article by Grant and Booth (2009) discusses 14 types of research reviews. But commonly systematic reviews for research gap identification; bibliometric studies for evolution of the concept and meta-analysis for combining the findings of independent studies are used in the literature. Depending on your study objectives, you can use any of the three..
In my view, in addition to what have been previously suggested, regardless of the review papers related to generality and classifications only, the review article should admit analytical approach to stand up on how far did previously publish papers investigate, what is the common methodologies, what is the main features and drawbacks of each methodology or approach, what is still need to be investigated including research gabs and recommendations for future studies.
In this kind of review papers (analytical), the analytical approach is highly recommended including tables, figures and flowcharts needed for the comparison and the data analysis.
