A good and much used free software is R (cran.org). But I am not sure if you are looking for a free data-entry program or a free data analysis program. R is a program for statistical analysis. I use it besides SPSS and Stata. I think there will be a package to help you analyze baseball data. I would not consider R 'bad free software'at all! In fact you can perform analyes you can not do with SPSS or Stata. In recent years there have be dozens of books published on R on a number of different statistical and datamanagement techniques.

Dear Peter, I do not mention R is a bad free soft. I suggest another option to choose demo versions. I wrote textbooks of JMP and LINGO with free soft.

Student could write good papers.

Maybe you should get yourself better informed. JMP and LINGO are small players compared to R, SPSS and SAS. R is used by a very large community and has some renowned statisticians creating packages for R. I think you are trying to provide fake-news regarding which software to use.
