A bright field image of the sample is attached. I wanted to know an accurate way of determining the average grain size of columnar grains in the structure. The Scherrer formula yields a grain size of approximately 10 nm. But I have read that calculating grain size in other ways will yield different results.
So, you have a XRD spectrum and calculated grain size based on peak broadening. But broadening of a peaks could be caused and by other.crystal structure imperfections. So, Scherrer equation gives only minimal possible crystal size; real size of crystals usually is bigger. Your TEM image is not really good for crystal size estimation.
from what i see, this is a typical structure for sputter deposited coating. grain size is usually not a term used for such kind of columnar grains and different parameters are needed.
