An axially loaded member is modeled as depicted in the figure attached. As we keep refining the mesh, the stress near the node where load is applied keeps on increasing, which indicates that stress singularity exists in that region. What is the most acceptable way to adress the stress singularity problem in Finite Element Method (FEM))near the node onto which force is applied?
Since the interpolation functions of traditional finite elements (not intended for fracture analisys) are linear or quadratic, there are no singularities in stresses. For uniform stress distribution (in the picture) the forces at the corners must be reduced by two times. At the same time we can expect some nonhomogeneity of stresses near constrain due to violation of reciprocity of shear stresses (in the case of encastre BC).
