What is the microscopic meaning of soil plasticity? Why soil of low plasticity is easier to liquefy?

In geotechnical earthquake engineering, it is well-known that soil plasticity in clay or silt hugely affect the liquefaction probability. But why? Is there any study to the micro-structure scale to explain this physical mechanism?
