There is a difference between ethics and law.

The idea is that morality is legal, but this is not always the case.

For example, lying is immoral, but not illegal. (except in special circumstances such as marriage or a transaction that causes negligence and loss of another person)

Or gossiping or being jealous are immoral, but the law has nothing to do with them.

But stealing is both illegal and immoral.

The law intervenes when you are openly wronging someone.

But in ethics, the verb is optional, that is, you do a good thing, while you can not do it.

Or you don't do immoral things while there is no punishment.

Ethics is for perfection and purity of soul and heart, but law is for respecting the rights of others.

And there is a difference between these two issues.

Some laws are immoral and some laws that are not per se immoral are applied in immoral ways. Nazi Germany is an example.
