For research on the semantics of directionality in films of the Mexican Revolution I have been looking for research into the meaning of directional movement and pointing. Some general remarks on the effect of panning etc aside, I have not come across relevant research. But that may well be due to the fact that I am largely unfamiliar with specialised research within the field of Psychology. As far as I can see, publications on the psychology of movement focus primarily on how the human mind processes movement but do not engage with whether or how specific types of movement are perceived as semantic in themselves. These are some of the questions I would like to be able to answer:

  • What are the suggestions for reading sideways movement (or pointing) semantically?
  • Is the 'semantics of movement' (for lack of a better term) universal?
  • Has the semantics of movement been discussed with regard to specific cultural or historical contexts?
  • I would be grateful for any pointers.
