Torrefaction is mild thermal pre-treatment process for biomass. However, the similarities in fuel characteristics between lignite (brown) coals and biomass indicates torrefaction or hydrothermal treatment may be practical. Is this feasible or has anyone attempted this? Please share your thoughts.
Dehydration is usually necessary for the utilization of brown coal.
Torrefaction is one of the most used method and need much energy. Some applications used extrusion method for the removal of most of moisture in brown coal. There are many articles published on the effect of dehydration process on the structure or reaction characteristics.

Many thanks for your comment. However, my interest is not in dehydration or drying of lignites but the treatment or conversion to improve its fuel properties. Hence, I was wondering if anyone has tried torrefaction or any low temp treatment of lignites between 200 - 400 C. My initial tests did not show any improvements and was wondering how best to improve the lignite properties for future clean applications.
Let me know your thoughts on this.
Hi Bemgba, dumb question, but isn't what you're describing is coke, pyrolyzed coal? It seems that there has been hundreds of years of research on that given its industrial importance.

Hi Bemgba, propably nothing as apart from the dehydration, the light volatiles that would convert in torrefaction do not exist in enough quantities in coal.
