My objective is to examine the effect of chemical pre-treatment on the energy recovery potential of different biomasses. Hence, I will like to explore the most environmentally friendly (acidic or alkaline) solvents for chemical based pre-treatment of the selected biomasses? Any insights, feedbacks or recommendation will be greatly appreciated.

If you really asking for Environmental friendly than we know the answer "neither high acidic solvent nor high alkaline solvent are environmental friendly". You may choose the solvent their pH has changed (Neutralized) after treatment of biomass that solvent may helpful. Try to explore that that solvent. I hope you may get that solvent for the biomass treatment.
