I dissolved chitosan in 1% acetic acid, you can try 0.5%, but it might take longer. Once dissolved you will have yellowesh colour clear solution. You need an acid environment to dissolve your chitosan as you need to protonate the amine group to make the chitosan water soluble.

I only have three more questions, did you use Acetic Acid or Glacial Acetic Acid because the Concentration is different

second question, what do you mean by 1%? Is it concentration of acid to water or (for each 100 grams of chitosan you used 1 ml of acid)

third question is how to protonate the Amine group?

We have worked on three selected acids for CS, namely, acetic acid, HCl and lactic acid. We found that both LA and AcOH showed exact similar results at 1% level. However, HCl showed a complete different story. It is recommended to use 1% AcOH.

I have used Glacial Acetic Acid

1% v/v the Glacial Acetic Acid concetration. so 1 ml of the acid you add to 99 ml of water. hope this make sence to you

the amin group of the chitosan is protenated in the acidic environment, as such chitosan can be disolved in acidic environment.

Thank you for your responce I really appreciate it and yes that made sense, but how many grams of chitosan should I add in this volume? I mean say I’m going to use 1 ml of acid and 99 ml of water, how many grams of Chitosan is going to be added to this volume according to chitosan properties in the picture?

Dear Ibrahim,

This will depend on the concentration you are trying to make. So what ever wieght of chitosan you are planning to use.

I have to say the chitosan you are using is a high molecular one, this means the viscosity of your solution will be high and which will affect your solubility of the chitosan. so you may want to try and how much you will able to add. it might be a trial and error expriment. Also, you may wamt to leave it longer for stirring
