I am conducting a parametric analysis.
The overall eqn would be yield= -A-E+AE
from the eqn, the individual factors have a net negative effect on the yield but the interaction has a positive effect. What could be the reason for the positive effect?
A= exposure time
E= microwave output power
yield= biochar yield in pyrolysis
One important thing to consider is if all of the effects are significantly different from zero. I also assume that the equation you have written has negative signs for A and E because they have negative effects. If, in fact, you correlated the equation with negative signs in it and then the coefficients were negative, the net effect would be that they have positive influences on the yield. Assuming the coefficients are statistically significant and that the individual effects decrease yield, my interpretation would be as follows:
1. Yield decreases with exposure time
2. Yield decreases with microwave power
However, these two effects, taken by themselves, exaggerate the decrease in yield so
3. The overall decrease in yield is somewhat less than the individual effects would suggest and the AE term accounts for that.
It is possible that the overall effect on yield would be positive because of the AE term, though that would be unusual. However, if that is true, the interpretation would be that the combination of exposure time and power increases yield whereas increasing either of them alone without changing the other decreases yield.
