I think species identification using keys in books and compendiums is rather ineffective because you always have to look up the next step and associated pictures on different pages. So I was wondering if there are any simple and free tools to digitize the key? At each step you choose the best fit between two descriptions, and I would like to have both text and pictures (interactive if possible) in the description. I've seen some local botanical keys that filter results based on answers to short questions, but that's not really what I'm looking for. It should ideally be possible to start the key on any taxonomic level. Any ideas?

It seems that what you are looking for are Lucid Keys (https://www.lucidcentral.org/). Also, if you want more than a key, like a taxonomic backbone, species pages, etc., you could set up a Scratchpad (http://scratchpads.eu/) on your group of interest and then build a Lucid key and integrate it into your Scratchpads. You can see how a Lucid key has been integrated into a Scratchpads at the AntKey website (http://www.antkey.org/en/content/key).

This is exactly where human error is much less than computer error. Because you have designed software with recognized attributes, not newly identified attributes. Thus, you have to consider all the attributes and their states for all worldwide plants. This will disrupt the detection procedure by the software, but human detection will be more efficient using the available keys. Human identification will perform better due to the power of analyzing the states of unknown traits and adapting to the states of previously known traits. On the other hand, identifying specimens is part of the job of a botanist who must have complete mastery over it, and there are now many expert botanists around the world.
