Human responses to climate change: Social representation, identity and socio-psychological action
Abstract:
Climate change is one of the most important global challenges in the twenty-first century, given that a changing climate is likely to have negative and potentially irreversible consequences for the environment and human beings. Drawing upon Social Representations Theory (SRT) and Identity Process Theory (IPT) from social psychology, we argue that research should focus upon, and successfully integrate, three levels of analysis, namely (1) how climate change knowledge is constructed and circulates (social representation); (2) the role of identity in relation to these representations (identity); and (3) how people might respond to them (action). It is suggested that identity processes may determine how people process social representations of climate change, and that they mediate the link between representations and environmental behavior. Understanding human responses to climate change necessitates an integrative social sciences perspective, in terms of disciplinary, theoretical, and methodological approaches.

Improvement on Social Representation of Climate Change through a Knowledge-Based MOOC in Spanish
Abstract
Climate Change is the most important threat to our society and all species on Earth. Large alterations in the climate are affecting every aspect of our society and in order to limit this impact we must decarbonize the economy before 2050. Although science presents solid evidence on the magnitude of the problem and outlines precisely the consequences, people do not act accordingly and do not consider this issue a priority for their survival. The reason behind this paradox might be a non-appropriate Social Representation of Climate Change in society as the Social Representation conditions and forms the response of the society. In this paper, we extend previous investigations of how this Social Representation is formed in order to find ways to improve it through a Massive Online Open Course on the Science of Climate Change. Using a validated questionnaire, we investigated the knowledge dimension of the Social Representation of Climate Change in a group of students of a MOOC on Climate Change. A pre- and posttest revealed general improvements in all the categories that were considered in this study. A detailed analysis showed different degrees of improvement for different groups, providing new insights in the efficiency of knowledge-based online courses. Well designed Massive Online Open Courses, based on scientific evidence, targeted to the general public might improve the Social Representation of Climate Change, which may in turn trigger awareness and an effective mobilization to address this important and urgent topic.

Exploring social representations of adapting to climate change using topic modeling and Bayesian networks
ABSTRACT.
When something unfamiliar emerges or when something familiar does something unexpected people need to make sense of what is emerging or going on in order to act. Social representations theory suggests how individuals and society make sense of the unfamiliar and hence how the resultant social representations (SRs) cognitively, emotionally, and actively orient people and enable communication. SRs are social constructions that emerge through individual and collective engagement with media and with everyday conversations among people. Recent developments in text analysis techniques, and in particular topic modeling, provide a potentially powerful analytical method to examine the structure and content of SRs using large samples of narrative or text. In this paper I describe the methods and results of applying topic modeling to 660 micronarratives collected from Australian academics / researchers, government employees, and members of the public in 2010-2011. The narrative fragments focused on adaptation to climate change (CC) and hence provide an example of Australian society making sense of an emerging and conflict ridden phenomena. The results of the topic modeling reflect elements of SRs of adaptation to CC that are consistent with findings in the literature as well as being reasonably robust predictors of classes of action in response to CC. Bayesian Network (BN) modeling was used to identify relationships among the topics (SR elements) and in particular to identify relationships among topics, sentiment, and action. Finally the resulting model and topic modeling results are used to highlight differences in the salience of SR elements among social groups. The approach of linking topic modeling and BN modeling offers a new and encouraging approach to analysis for ongoing research on SRs.

Elite News Coverage of Climate Change

During the past three decades, elite news media have become influential translators of climate change linking science, policy, and the citizenry. Historical trends in public discourse—shaped in significant part by elite media—demonstrate news media’s critical role in shaping public perception and the level of concern towards climate change. Media representations of climate change and global warming are embedded in social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions that influence individual-level processes such as everyday journalistic practices. Media have a strong influence on policy decision-making, attitudes, perspectives, intentions, and behavioral change, but those connections can be challenging to pinpoint; consequently, examinations of elite news coverage of climate change, particularly in recent decades, have sought to gain a stronger understanding of these complex and dynamic webs of interactions. In so doing, research has more effectively traced how media have taken on varied roles in the climate change debate, from watch dogs to lap dogs to guard dogs in the public sphere. Within these areas of research, psychological aspects of media influence have been relatively underemphasized. However, interdisciplinary and problem-focused research investigations of elite media coverage stand to advance considerations of public awareness, discourse, and engagement. Elite news media critically contribute to public discourse and policy priorities through their “mediating” and interpretative influences. Therefore, a review of examinations of these dynamics illuminate the bridging role of elite news coverage of climate change between formal science and policy, and everyday citizens in the public sphere.

Social Representations of Climate Change: A Cross-Cultural Investigation
Abstract
The study explored the social understanding of climate change among Filipinos and Americans, employing Social Representations Theory. Six hundred seventy three participants from the Philippines and Guam were asked to answer a free association questionnaire in which they were to write the first three ideas that came to their mind at the thought of climate change. Abric’s (2008) Hierarchical Evocation Method (HEM) was used in analyzing the data. Both groups have similar comprehension of climate change. Central to that understanding is the idea that this social phenomenon is very much related to global warming. Peripheral elements include climate change as associated with environmental destruction as well as calamities and disasters, its causes as well as impacts. Even though there are similarities in their representations, the two groups show differences in the way these are expressed. Results have implications on the construction and enactment of strategies and courses of action on climate change adaptation and mitigation..

Training and retraining with focus on environmental impacts of climate change to sensitize and create awareness on its mitigation and adaptation.
The theme should start from the same society, and how to face its own problems, capacity development processes should meet those requirements, especially adaptation capacities and transformation capacities in the long temr.
Social representations are of great importance in an educational program, as are specialists in the field. But, for a good implementation of a behavior change program, you need the help of state representatives or organizations in the area. The approach to behavior change is not applicable in the same way in all societies.

However, State Representatives and organizations should take into account the Social Representations of populations whose behavior they wish to see changed. The results of Scientific studies of Social Representations are important and useful to this end. They should be consider in development of Education and dissemination projects and/or programs
The group dynamic is very complex in terms of behavior change which then justifies the fact that there is no miracle approach suitable for all populations as you said. Even within the same community it can vary from one individual or a group of individuals to another.
