There have been growing concerns on the advent of social media having an adverse effect on students learning. Students are seen spending more time on social media than their books in most parts of Africa and other parts of the world.
It is difficult to precise exactly what the impact is.
At a hypothetical level I am tempted to say high, in many ways.Communication and Information dissemination has been significantly faciliteated
At least, I know students have created a facebook account with the name of the courses they attend. There they exchange information and advice on their classes(notes, exam dates etc).
MOODLE is also used, I am not sure if this is relevant.
I am pretty sure there are other points there too, just not examined yet.
As with many phenomena, the coin have two sides. Social media can confuse and disturb students in a lecture halls or classroom since the classroom walls no longer keeps the rest of the world outside. But it can also be used in very focused way when studying together and solving problems. It can however with some tools as Facebook be hard for some to keep private matters and studies apart. Information is hard to control, information friction has become very low.
