Colleges of Education in Ghana allows students to do a general program in the first year and allow them to specialize in the subsequent year. As such, what can a teacher do to attract more students to pursue/select to learn his subject area?
Hello Akwasi - a personal and 'gut' response rather than an evidence-based/research response:
1. Build relationships with students so that they like and respect you and feel that they can continue to learn from you if they choose your unit/option.
2. Enthuse about your subject specialism where appropriate within the first year general program. Take opportunities to make natural links.
3. Feed back positively and constructively to students when assessing their first year work (both orally and in writing) - that helps to build the respect called for in response 1.
4. Use the existing 'marketing' systems in place at your institution to underline the relevance and value of your subject option for the students' study and future career and employment ambitions.
5. Don't look to attract more students to 'your' area by talking down or disrespecting other units - be professional - 'do unto colleagues as you would be done to yourself'.
6. Continue to respect students who DON'T choose your option - everybody needs to select the path that's right for them.
Hopefully, your expertise, engaging teaching, and interest in your students will in combination lead to lots of students choosing your unit/subject area!
As a teachers, first we need to understand our students' interest and and their capacity on the subject area. Teachers need to learn what are the strengths, interesting things and important points why and how the student can contribute to their subject are. Tell them such all things, the strengths of their subject, and shows them some experts in their subject area and how the expert contribute to their subject area, how interesting working n their area. And tell the prospects in for future career in their subject area. Hopefully, it helps little bit.
Basic requirement to attract students to opt the subject of the teacher for higher education is that the teacher should become role model of the knowledge of the subject and and he/she uses best strategies of teaching for different topics of the subject so that the students are impressed by his/her sincerity and industriousness.Another important point is that the teacher should inform the students about the importance of the subject in daily life and opportunities of jobs related to that subject.
I can only add that if it is at all possible, engage students in your subject area thru a project. Ask for volunteers and promote the benefit of the project to the University and surrounding community. Students are attracted to projects that are highlighted on the Campus News website and other social media where everyone else is reading about them.
As a teacher and a former student (as we all were once) , if you want to attract students to your chosen profession/area of expertise/subject matter, you must demonstrate ta style of excitement and engagement that will attract others' interest. Obviously, you cannot get the attention of those who have other specialized directions already in mind, but you may be able to "sell" your love of a subject to those who are not yet committed to another track. You must identify and exemplify for your students those outcomes, jobs, careers, and experiences that make the selection of your subject area worthy of pursuit.
