I want to cut epoxy filled nanocomposite for FE-SEM analysis. What is the best way to cut it without resulting in any cracks or change in position or alignment of the particle reinforcement ? Also the cutting method must not burn the material.
You can try Abrasive water jet cutting machine for different profiles and long soecimens. But for smaller samples for sem studies, try switch board cutting machine.
VERY HIGH PRESSURE WATER JET CUTTING is very practical for this type of material. This technique consists in using the kinetic energy of water particles mixed or not with abrasive particles and projected at speeds of several hundred m/s on the material to be cut. Cold cutting is done without thermal damage on soft materials.
As others said water jet cutting might be apt for your description… But I still feel CO2 laser offers more versatility. If you are afraid of burning the material use masking tape or compressed air(at about 50psi) to prevent it from burning.
I have also seen people use CNC milling with low feed rates for the same.
