Over the years, I have recorded white-flowered forms of the following, and I understand that they tend to be double recessive variants. Is this in fact the case?
I really don't know how it is e.g. for the black Iris. Sometimes there is a yellow flowering between them. And someone told me that it like the dark glove missing. I like this explanation. As it sound to me not really having a genetical basis.
In many cases, it is a LOF (loss of function) mutation in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway that blocks the ability of plants of producing anthocyanins. This can happen at the whole plant level or at a modular level (e.g. Flowers). A lot of this has been studied in Ipomoea and other plant models. Search in Google Scholar and you'll find plenty of articles. Good luck.
