Synthesis of thermoplastic polyurethane
What is the gelation reason in polyurethane synthesis, when all materials are 2 functional but as soon as addition of chain extender it goes to gelation?

obviously, in gelation crosslinking occurs. But, when all materials are 2 functional, average functionality is 2 therefore gelation shouldn't occur. Although, I know some reaction such as allophonate may form. after all, what is the reason for gelling?
and how I can prevent from gelation?
