Semiconductor technology, for example, relies heavily on thin film deposition and characterization. It's also important for all kinds of functional coatings. It is in that sense very established already.
Challenges:
- Better control over film properties and better understanding of structure-property relations
- Cheaper or better deposition methods
- New materials
- New applications, for example new types of devices built from thin films
- What are ideal film properties for a given application? How can we achieve them?
Examples:
- Better conducting electrodes for displays
- Semiconductors with higher mobility
- Better efficiency for LEDs
- Dielectrics with lower losses, less leakage, higher strength or higher dielectric constant
- Coatings to promote tissue growth and adhesion, generally bioactive coatings
- Hydrophobic or lipophobic coatings
- High-Tc superconductor devices
- Resistive switching memory
- Fuel cell components
- Multiferroic materials or material systems
- ...

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is coming up with new thin film depositions for different applications in technology, specially in semiconductor technology.
